Occupied Kashmir: The Massacres always start from January

Indian occupation of Kashmir is built on the graveyards of Kashmiris. While January is known as the month of massacres in Kashmir, each day here has a memory of its own - massacres, murders, rapes, crackdowns and forced disappearances.

Since 1989 between 80,000 to 100,000 Kashmiris have been killed by the occupation. None of the perpetrators of this violence have ever been punished or even prosecuted.

As January comes to an end, we remember the countless Kashmiris who have lost their lives to the Indian occupation.

On January 19, 1990, Srinagar was handed over to India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as Jagmohan Malhotra of Bharatiya Janata Party was appointed the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. Local police on the streets of Srinagar were now replaced by Indian CRPF.

On Jan 20, the CRPF barged into several houses in an old city locality called Chota Bazar and conducted wanton arrests in addition to molesting some women.

Jan 21, 1990 - The next day, as the news about the molestations started spreading, a protest rally organised against the military crackdown and atrocities moved its way into Gaw Kadal in the heart of Srinagar. When the procession reached the Gaw Kadal area, the CRPF, started firing indiscriminately at the crowd killing over 60 civilians and injuring hundreds. The Gaw Kadal massacre marked the beginning of a series of massacres in Kashmir.

Zooni Begum in her village in Budgam, occupied Kashmir

This elderly woman is older than the Indian state.  At age 108, she is being evicted from her home by the Indian government.

The government claims that more than 63,000 people are illegally occupying 15,000 hectares of forest land in Kashmir. Earlier this year, the government demolished more than a dozen huts of a tribal community as part of the eviction program. Also in the Budgam area, locals in Kanidajan village reported the government chopping 10,000 apple trees in an attempt to remove residents.

“Where will we go at this age, after living here for 150 years?” Zooni said. “My father was more than 100. I remember the names of my great-grandfathers, too, who lived here.”   Read Zooni's story and more @ Medium.com

The power crisis in occupied Kashmir created by New Delhi is too appalling to articulately describe in words.

Can India handle the truth? Modi fantasizes about turning India into Israel. Both Hindutva & Zionism share a common ambition to build supremacist states with a single culture, a single race and a single nation.   Read @ Middle-East Eye
