The Alawites

The Alawites were formerly called 'Nusyaris' after a medieval spiritual leader named Abu Shuaib Nusayri.  But soon after the Alawites considered it highly derogatory to be called "Nusayris."   Instead, they became known as Alawis, being symbolic of following the teachings of Imam Ali.

The Alawis claim to trace their origin from the 11th imam, Hassan Al-Askari.  Abu Nusayr was said to the the student of Imam Hassan al-Askari, though this isn't confirmed.  However,  Nusayr's ideology deviated into a very different and un-Islamic path by assigning divinity to Imam Ali, a theory that was completely rejected.

Late Hafez al-Assad of Syria declared the Alawites must follow the same doctrine as the Twelver Shiias (that is, the majority Isn-e-Asheri  denomination of Shiias .. same as the Shiias of Iran).  Bashar al-Assad has continued to maintain the framework of his father's governance.  In fact, under the directions of the Assad government, the Alawite culture has also moved very close to Sunni Islam.  Assad senior had set several examples for the people by adhering to various Sunni practices.  The online encyclopedia writes "The Alawi religion evolved during the years under Hafez Al Assad's rule, so that Alawites became not Shiia, but effectively Sunni. Public manifestation or even mentioning of any Alawite religious activities was banned, as was any Alawite religious organizations or any formation of a unified religious council or a higher Alawite religious authority.  Sunni-style mosques were built in every Alawite village."

In the mid 1970s, Musa Al-Sadr, founder of the Amal Movement in Lebanon, a very senior mainstream Shiia leader and follower of the twelve imams issued a fatwa that the Alawites belonged  to the community of Twelver Shiia Muslims.

Some hardline medieval Sunni scholars such as Ibn Kathir declared Alawites as "pagans" because of the Nusayri ideology.  Although later the Nusayri doctrine was completely trashed by the Alawites, such official declarations by the medieval imams have had far-reaching consequences.  They are still serving as the foundation for sectarian differences, as an outcome of which, the bulk of the Sunni world is supporting the West in the present Syrian conflict.

Under the Assad government, religious minorities have been tolerated far more than they were prior to the 1970s which has led many closed minded observers to presume that Alawis are staunch secularists or even "heretics."  That's of course nonsense and quite the opposite of what people claim.  Tolerance of minorities is a factor much in line with Quranic values.  The Syrian constitution of 1973 upholds that the religion of the republic's president is Islam instead of the state religion being Islam as asserted before - a statement that was often misinterpreted by hardliners.  Issues like these have periodically been blown out of all proportion by firebrand traditionalists, issuing fatwas and declaring Assad's government as "deviants."

It's about time for Muslims to be open-minded and to monitor the truth, otherwise only our imperialist enemies will be the beneficiaries.

So i see you have a soft corner for the devil Asad who is murdering his own people, shame on you.

  2. Ahmed Ali Hussain : WRONG !!!! You see it wrong. It's the other way round. The devils are the ones infiltrating inside Syria - the Al Qaeda terrorists being fed with US dollars and weapons via Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia .. Jordan also playing a very significant role. The idea is to weaken the resistance against Israel by installing a puppet Salafist regime. This is no "revoluton" nor any "arab spring." Syria is under foreign attack with well over 70% of Syrians (which includes Sunnis, Shiias and Christians) supporting their government. Assad is simply defending his country against those thugs.

  3. This Ahmaed Ali Hussian in some low paid whore of the CIA waiting for his next pay cheque.

  4. Poor Ahmed Ali Khan, it seems he's had a bad day. Feel sorry for the guy.

  5. I have blocked this unique madman, Ahmed Ali Hussain, to put an end to his non-stop propaganda of corrupt politics. The idiot thinks that the 2 anonymous comments dated Apr.26th and May 1st were from me. He wrote in his second comment (which I trashed and flushed down the toilet), quote: "zainab is a coward and is hiding behind anonymous ...." Ahmed Ali Hussain, I'm not a munafiq like you. I am not afraid of anyone but Allah. Why the hell should I hide my name from anyone when I'm the owner of this blog? It shows what a messed up mind you have when you cannot even make a correct assumption on a comment name. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You said you are out of "this garbage." But I don't think so. Munafiqs have 2 mouths. They say one thing and do something quite different. If you said you're walking out of this garbage, that means you will return again and again. Hurray! I'm gonna like that. You know why? Your shitty comments aren't worth the paper they're written on. Thus, I'm waiting to receive more of your humbug because there's a homeless peoples' shelter close by. Before trashing your comments, I'll print them on soft paper and distribute those papers to the poor people in that homeless shelter so they can use your comments as a toilet role to wipe their rear. Now that's an economical idea, and imagine how much money those poor people will save on buying regular toilet roles.

Brother Aleem, if I'm not mistaken, those 2 anonymous comments were from you?

  6. Salam Sister Zainab. Yes those 2 were from me. without registration and google a/c it's simplest for me to use 'anonymous.' Or, if you allow me to access through your site. In any case I'll mention my name with every future comment from now onward - InshAllah.

Ahmed Ali Husain, think before you conclude anything .... think before you talk cause you're talking too much nonsense like a bad man. I didn't see your trashed comment but Sister has given a clear idea of it. People like you are very capable of that kind of behavior. Don't get so lost in your $$$$ pay cheques from CIA and your friendship with the Yahuds and its kufar allies. Munafiqism is hateful in the Sight of Allah.

Good idea Sister, make tissue rolls out of his comments and send them to the poor to clean their backs.

    Alim Amin

  7. Thank you Sister Zainab, very good decision to kick out Ahmed Ali and anyone who follows him up, boot them out too. This is not the place for trouble makers. If you guys want to discuss, then discuss in a civilized manner. If you act rude, we will also act rude and throw you out. This blog supports whoever it likes. It doesn't need your permission. You don't like the views of this blog, then who is telling you to come here, you idle loafers? Sister Zainab was absolutely right. Munafiqs have 2 mouths. Ahmed Ali came back in a series of a.k.a.'s. All booted out with boom! I'm glad it was my turn to moderate today. I made toilet rolls out of all those nonsensical comments, about 9 or 10 of them. Ha ha!

You roaches accusing sister Zainab of using bad language .... what bad language did she use, tell me? On the other hand the languages you people used was so bad that it couldn't even be posted and had to be deleted, calling her a "prostitute of Asad," then calling her a "whore," then here in his first comment Ahmed Ali tells Zainab "shame on you" for her personal views. And then Ahmed Ali in the name of a woman, comments that "he has a right to his views." If he has a right to his views then don't others have a right to their views? So why did he say "shame on you" to Zainab. And this was the first comment, which means Ahmed Ali is the starter of all rudeness & mischief. Not that it matters to us. We spit on the words that come from lowly insects like you guys. But I'm simply exposing how shamelessly you munafiqs and traitors cast stones on others from a glasshouse while doing exactly what you falsely accuse others of.

Horrible people! No one coming here any more. Everyone out !!
